Rock View Cabin
Lake George, NY
Tucked into the trees behind an overlooking Lake George log cabin, this cozy modern retreat designed by AJA Architecture and Planning gives peaking Adirondack views through the trees towards the water below.
The main goals for this project were to provide a guest cottage that not only complemented the view shed, nestled into the site, and provided a gathering space for family and friends but also sat in contrast to the historic log cabin on the site.
To accomplish these goals AJA Architecture and Planning designed a simplified modern cabin with proportions that resemble older lakeside cabins tying the structure in form to the other building on the property. To settle the building into the site and give views through the trees the cabin was recessed into the surrounding rock ledge and oriented to look underneath the canopy of trees along the lake. With a gracious living space and expansive deck on the lakeside, it provides plenty of gathering space for the owner’s large extended family. With a large family comes the need to sleep more people and give them a way to retreat at the end of the day. The taller private sleeping side of the building gives plenty of space for guests, separating the bedrooms from the excitement all while giving the bedrooms lake or forest views. Constructed in a modern shape with a clean white interior the materials inside and out give a nod to historic lakeside camps while maintaining a simplified grace.
